This eight-card set of San Antonio Spurs is one of two that were sponsored by Diamond Shamrock, a regional oil retailer and convenience store chain headquartered in San Antonio. One set had a tear-off tab, and one card was given out each week at San Antonio Diamond Shamrock CornerStore locations with each 3.00 purchase or purchase of eight gallons of gas. It is reported that 100,000 sets were printed. This promotion included weekly drawings for pairs of tickets and a final drawing to determine the winners of the Grand Prize and other prizes. The expiration of the contest to "Win A Road Trip With The Spurs" was May 21, 1989. The other set was donated to the San Antonio Police Department and distributed to kids in the San Antonio area by patrolmen on the night shift; 50,000 sets were produced. The cards measure approximately 2 1/2" by 3 9/16" and except for the tear-off tab, the two sets are identical. The front features a color action player photo with a white border (only the Robinson card has a posed shot). The card front has a distinctive black background with a white pinstripe pattern. Three color bands (aqua, red, and orange) overlay the top of the picture, with the team logo in the middle. The player's name is given in the aqua band below the picture. The back has biographical information and a player safety tip in a gray box. The San Antonio Police and sponsor logos appear at the bottom. The cards are unnumbered and checklisted below in alphabetical order, with jersey number after the player's name. The set may have received additional multiple printings in order to capitalize on the popularity of the David Robinson card, which was printed a year earlier than his 1989-90 Hoops Rookie Card.
