The 1996-97 Finest set was issued in two series totaling 291 cards. The 6-card packs retail for $5.00 each. The series one set is divided into 3-tiers of collectiblilty with cards B1-B100 defined as "common" cards, S101-S127 defined as "uncommon" and inserted at a rate of 1:4 packs and G128-G146 defined as "rare" and inserted at a rate of 1:24 packs. Each card is also arranged into individually designed theme sets - Gladiators, Maestros, Apprentices and Sterling. The series two set is also divided into 3-tiers of collectiblility with cards B147-B246 defined as "common", S247-S273 defined as "uncommon" and inserted at a rate of 1:4 packs and G274-G291 defined as "rare" and inserted at a rate of 1:24 packs. Each card is also arranged into individually designed theme sets - Mainstays, Sterling, Heirs and Foundations. Prices below are for unpeeled cards. Peeled cards generally trade for ten to twenty-five percent less. Card numbers 7 and 134 do not exist. The Christian Laettner bronze, Patrick Ewing gold and Jeff Hornacek gold were all numbered 136. Card number 269 (Kobe Bryant gold) is considered part of the gold set, while card number 289 (Shaquille O'Neal silver) is considered part of the silver set, though they are both out of "set" order.
