This 160-card set features color action player photos with a palette name box and shadowed "Mystique" in the background. The cards were issued in four-card packs with an SRP of $4.99 per pack. The backs carry player statistics. The set included the following two subsets: Rookies (101-150) serially numbered to 2,999, and Stars (151-160) serially numbered to 2,500. The cards with "SP" following the player's name in our checklist were distributed only as peel offs. Peel off cards were seeded at a rate of one per pack. Collectors had to peel off the sparkling foil coating off the front and back of the card to reveal what it was (hence the name "Mystique"). Peel off cards were either short printed super stars from the basic set (1-100), a serial numbered Prospect or Star card (101-160) or an insert card. A promo card featuring J.D. Drew was distributed to dealers and hobby media several weeks prior to the product's release. This Drew card is easily identified by the text "PROMOTIONAL SAMPLE" running diagonally across the front and back of the card. This set contains Pat Burrell's "Best" Rookie Card. The Phillies player had 25 Rookie Cards issued in 1999 and the Fleer Mystique was the only one that was serial numbered. That, in large part, boosted this card to the top of many collectors wantlists after the product's release. Read Less »
