This set was released in June, 1999 and was distributed in five card packs with an SRP of $4.99 per pack. The packs came 24 to a box. The first 47 card of the set feature an assortment of players honored from the Sporting News of 100 Greatest Players. The next 50 cards feature Upper Deck's choices of the best active players. The final cards are utilized for the following subsets: 21 CP (Cards numbered 101 through 120) and Memorablue Shots (Cards numbered 122 through 135.) Cards 11, 25, 26 and 126 do not exist. Due to contractual problems, Upper Deck had to pull the player's originally intended to be featured on these cards. Thus, though the set is numbered 1-135, it is complete at only 131 cards. A game-used bat from legendary slugger Jimmie Foxx was cut into approximately 350 pieces, incorporated into special A Piece of History 500 Club cards and randomly seeded into packs. Pricing for these scarce Foxx bat cards can be referenced under 1999 Upper Deck A Piece of History 500 Club. A Babe Ruth sample card was distributed to dealers and media several weeks prior to the product's national release. The card parallels Ruth's regular issue card except for the word "SAMPLE" running in red text diagonally across the card back.
