This multi-sport 1948-49 Sports Champions Exhibits issue contains 50 cards. The cards measure approximately 3 1/4" by 5 3/8". The cards are identifiable by a line of agate type below the facsimile autograph relating some information about the player's accomplishments. The cards, as with most exhibits, are blank backed. The catalog designation for this exhibit set is W469. The cards issued in 1949 are reportedly at least twice as difficult to find as those issued in 1948. Cards issued only in 1949 are indicated with (49) in the checklist. Variations on Button and Scott exist in the agate line of type found on the bottom of the card. These cards were issued in conjunction with the 1948 Olympics. Cards were found in penny arcade machines with one card for a penny or two. The cards issued in 1949 feature some of the Summer Olympic champions plus second poses of (Winter Olympians) Button and Scott. The key card in the set is George Mikan. We've assigned numbers and prefixes (BB- baseball, BK- basketball, BX- boxing, FB- football, HK- hockey, OT- other) to the otherwise unnumbered cards for cataloging purposes. There has been some recent speculation that the Weir card does not exist. Any collector's input would be greatly appreciated.
